Unitex is a corpus processing system, based on automata-oriented technology. With this tool, you can handle electronic resources such as electronic dictionaries and grammars and apply them. You can work at the levels of morphology, lexicon and syntax. We will briefly present the tool, and then insist on its history that illustrates how closed systems developped by protective scientists are a brake to research more than full contributions to the community.

Sébastien Paumier is an associate professor in computer science at Université Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée. NLP specialist, he is the main author of the corpus processing free software Unitex. He has also written in association with Cédrick Fairon and Jean-René Klein the book "Le Langage SMS", dealing with a SMS collect project for scientific research and analysing the first results.
