The OpenWrt project
Initially developed to work on Wi-Fi routers, OpenWrt has been evolving to cover more embedded hardware use cases ranging from the network equipment to the Internet tablet and the mobile phone. A lot of companies and free software related projects have been using it as the primary embedded development framework.
In this presentation, we will cover the general structure of the environment, and see how fast we can prototype a complete embedded system while adding both the hardware target and the required applications.
Florian Fainelli has been fascinated since 2002 by the deployment of large wireless metropolitan networks and thus got interested in OpenWrt to provide a unified firmware for such network.
He recently co-founded an electronics company (Openpattern) specializing in free designs (PCB, Schematics, IPs) mainly using FPGAs as a hardware platform.
